Honduras, Belize, and Mexico pt. 3

Experiences From Harvest Caye, Belize

8:00 am, Tuesday morning, Day 4 of the voyage: a packed day was waiting for us as we docked at Harvest Caye, Belize. The sun shone brightly as always, and the heat was almost unbearable without a good hat and some sunglasses.

The interesting thing about Harvest Caye is that it’s an island that’s entirely owned by the Norwegian Cruise Line, and it’s a classy, expensive island that is purely used for entertainment and relaxation purposes for tourists.

As soon as we disembarked the ship, we had to walk about a quarter of a mile along a dock that led to the island. The views of the sparkling water were stunning, and I couldn’t wait to get into the water.

On today’s agenda: a walk through a wildlife sanctuary, a swim at the beach, snorkeling by reefs, and drinking coconut water! I was super excited to explore Belize and have a phenomenal time while doing so!

First up: a short walk through a wildlife sanctuary. As soon as we entered the island, we were greeted with a beautiful arrangement of plants and shops that complimented each other wonderfully. The colors were gorgeous, and the sunlight made everything even more vibrant. We saw an entrance to a wildlife sanctuary and wanted to take a look -we ended up strolling through a butterfly garden and got to see many pretty insects and learn about their habitat. After meeting the butterflies, we went on to see a boa constrictor, an iguana, a toucan, and also a macaw! All the animals were so much fun to read about and see, and I’m so glad that we stopped to appreciate life on the island!

As the sun kept beating on us, I knew the only thing that was going to cool me off was the ocean right in front of me. Since the island welcomes all, there were encouraging signs directing people right towards the beach, and there were hundreds of beach chairs arranged for everyone to enjoy. The water was incredibly clear and refreshing, and it was truly the perfect temperature to cool off on the hot day! There were also zip liners swooshing over the lagoon, and it looked like a super fun ride!

It was time to meet up for snorkeling, so we headed by the docks and boarded a boat that would sail us close to an island so we could snorkel! As we were getting to the island, the boat was sailing incredibly fast -my hat almost flew off the boat, but someone luckily caught it before it landed in the water! (thank goodness!) As soon as we made it to the snorkeling area, we saw many private islands near by! (Note to self: life goal- own a private island or at least be friends with someone who does.) Snorkeling was like no other, and I’m a firm believer in the fact that you can never snorkel too much. We got to see a sting ray which was so exciting! It was definitely a little scary to be up close to some dangerous fish, but I had a blast. The water was the best, and the gentle waves were so fun to glade on. (Another note to self: snorkel as much as you possibly can.)

Next up: taking heavenly sips out of a heavenly coconut. Attention all people who say they hate coconut— I was one of you before today, but listen up: you just haven’t had good coconut. Now, I’m not talking about dried coconut. (I have to admit that I’m not the biggest fan of dried coconut). We bought a coconut from a shop right where we entered the island from. They cut it open and gave us a straw to drink up all the coconut water. There’s nothing like drinking coconut water from an actual coconut! After I drank up all the water, we went back to the shop, and they cut up the coconut to scoop out all the jelly (aka coconut meat)and give it to us. The coconut jelly (I mean meat) was delicious, and I am so having coconut again soon!

Another day was almost in the books, but dinner was still left! We went to a steakhouse on board the Norwegian Joy, and the food was just what I needed after a long, tiring day. I can’t wait for Costa Maya, Mexico!
